What Is VOCAT?
VOCAT is the Victims of Crimes Assistance Tribunal. This Tribunal processes applications made by victims of crime for compensation.
If you have been the victim of a violent crime, are the parent or a close family member of a victim of crime, or have witnessed a violent crime you may be eligible for compensation.
To assist victims to recover, VOCAT provides financial assistance for any expenses that have been incurred or any reasonable expenses.
You will need to report the crime to the local police to be eligible for assistance from VOCAT.
The Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal provides compensation to victims who have suffered physical or psychological injury as a result of any violent crime.
Under the Victims of Crime Assistance Act 1996 (Vic) victims of crime in Victoria are entitled to apply for financial assistance to help them to recover from crimes committed against them. This means that if you have incurred, or you are likely to incur, expenses as a direct result of a crime then you may be entitled to compensation.
You may be eligible for financial assistance if:
1. a violent crime was committed against you and you have suffered and injury; and
2. the crime occurred in Victoria; and you are considered a primary, secondary, or related victim of the crime. This includes if you have incurred funeral expenses as a result of the death of a primary victim.
If you are a victim of a crime, you might have incurred some costs and expenses. As such, it is important to understand all the legal frameworks and financial assistance that you can apply for. We are here to help you with that!
Western Law can help you by assessing whether you are eligible for compensation and advising what evidence you need to gather for your application. Often your evidence will include witness statements, receipts and invoices, medical reports and so forth. We can then prepare and lodge the application to VOCAT on your behalf.
Best of all, we do not charge any fees for VOCAT applications unless your application is successful. Terms and conditions apply.
